Kia to Develop Wireless Charging Technology in Electric Vehicles

Kia’s commitment to innovation knows no bounds. This pioneering automaker is currently developing wireless charging systems for select Soul EV (Electric Vehicle) models.

Kia recently partnered with Mojo Mobility, Inc. to develop and incorporate wireless charging systems on its upcoming Soul EV. This wireless charging system will offer quicker and more efficient charging without the use of plugs. Kia is one of the first automakers working to develop and include this technology on their vehicles, which is sure to progress the future of electric vehicles.

Kia is currently in a three-year development project testing real-world performance and implications of this technology. The wireless charging system transfers over 10 kilowatts to the vehicle striving for an 85% grid-to-fuel efficiency.

While there are currently no plans to include this wireless charging technology on upcoming Soul EV models for customers to purchase, Kia does suggest however that the success of this technology could lead to its possible inclusion on other future Kia electric models in the future.

“We set out to develop wireless charging that has real world applications and is easy to use for the consumer. Now, with this fleet of wireless Soul EVs, we can clearly see a future of unplugged electric vehicles,” states William Freels of Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center, Inc.
